Liu, Pukun received the B.S. degree in radio physics from Nanjing University, Nanjing, China, in 1987, the M.S. degree in physics electronics from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Chengdu, China, in 1991, and the Ph.D. degree in nuclear fusion and plasma physics from Southwestern Institute of Physics, Chengdu, China, in 1995, respectively. From 1996 to 1998, he worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Peking University, Beijing, China, and at Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel. From 1999 to 2000, he worked as an Alexander-von-Humboldt Research Fellow at Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, Karlsruhe, Germany. From 2000 to 2013, he worked as a Research Professor at the Institute of Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China. Between 2002 and 2012, he served successively as head of the key laboratory and deputy director of the institute. Since 2013, he has been a Full Professor with Tenure in the Department of Electronics, School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science, and has served as the Director of Institute of Applied Electronics. Currently, his research interests include terahertz wave manipulation and super-resolution imaging based on subwavelength designer meta-structure, microwave, millimeter and terahertz wave sources and their applications in the area of biomedicine, radar, and communication et al.

Prof. Liu has published more than 400 research papers on the international journals and conferences, published an English academic monograph on Springer, and authorized 22 Chinese invention patents. He also won two Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, one Outstanding Scientific and Technological Achievement Prize of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, one First Prize of national defense science and technology award, one First Prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of Ministry of Education, and three second prize of ministerial level science and technology progress award. His honors include Winner of Hundred-Talent Program, Chinese Academy of Sciences (2000), Winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars (2001), Distinguished Professor of Cheung Kong Scholars Program, Ministry of Education (2004), and the New Century Talents Project national candidates (2006). Now, he has served as Executive Director of China Vacuum Society, Vice Chairman of Terahertz Branch of China Electronics Society, Associate Editor, Journal of Microwave, and Member of Editorial Board of other 6 journals.

Prof. Liu was responsible for more than 20 projects such as the National Science and Technology Major Projects, the National High-Tech R&D Program (863 plan), the National Natural Science Foundation and so on in the past 20 years. His research achievements are summarized as follows:

1. Gyrotron theory and technology: Systematic research work on device schemes, theoretical model and mechanisms, simulation and design, key components, etc., has been carried out. The high-power Ka-band gyroklystron, Ka-band gyro-TWT, W-band gyrotron oscillator, and W-band gyro-BWO have been developed independently. These works will be of great significance to the future development of high-power remote millimeter-wave radar, controlled thermonuclear fusion reactor, millimeter-wave active deny system, dynamic nuclear polarization enhanced nuclear magnetic resonance and so on.

2. Space-borne TWT: The space-borne traveling wave tube (STWT) is the key component of various types of satellites and spacecrafts. A number of STWT key technology, such as long-life cathode, integrated design software, high-efficiency technology, suppressing oscillation and distortion by harmonics and intermodulation, radiation-cooled depressed collector, etc., were solved, and a variety of high efficiency STWT were successfully developed. These works have made important contributions to the sinicization of STWT in our country.

3. Terahertz wave generation and super-resolution imaging: Terahertz wave is a frontier of international electromagnetic research. Enhanced and tunable THz radiation sources are achieved through interaction between electron beam and spoof surface plasmons (SSP) and graphene surface plasmons (GSP). The SSP and Fabry-Perot resonance in subwavelength meta-structures are applied to realize THz super-resolution imaging. Methods of high-efficiency SSP exciting and directional launching are proposed, and waveguide mode conversions are realized by manipulating SSP.
