The Introduction to the Electronic Information Science and Technology Fundamentals Laboratory Center of Peking University
The Electronic Information Science and Technology Fundamentals Laboratory Center is located in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science at Peking University and is jointly led by the school's academic affairs department and the laboratory and equipment management department. The center is located in Yan Yuan campus.
In September 2000, Peking University established the Electronic Information Science and Technology Fundamentals Laboratory Center based on the foundation of the circuit fundamentals laboratory in the former Department of Electronics. The center is responsible for all the basic electronic information lab teaching, organization, research, and management across the entire university. In 2006, it was recognized as a demonstration center for experimental teaching in Beijing.
The center has 19 laboratories which divided into five categories: basic circuit labs, electronic design labs, comprehensive design labs, technical labs, and research and innovation labs. Guided by the principle of "strengthening the foundation, emphasizing integration, respecting choice, embodying advancement, and highlighting innovation," the center has developed an electronic information science and technology fundamentals laboratory curriculum system featuring a combination of science and engineering. It has reformed 31 lab courses and provided high-quality lab teaching services to 12 departments and majors with both Electronic and non-Electronic backgrounds, serving over 200,000 students every year.
Currently, the center has 10 full-time teachers (including 2 professors and 1 associate professor) and more than 40 part-time teachers. The center's teachers hold many positions in social organizations or associations, such as the deputy director of the Ministry of Education's Higher Education Electronic Information Major Teaching Guidance Committee, a member of the education industry cooperation project expert group, the deputy director of the Beijing University Electronic Design Competition Organizing Committee, a leader of the Beijing expert group, the vice chairman of the Beijing Higher Education Association's Electronic Circuitry Research Branch, an executive director of the Higher Education Circuit and Signal System Teaching and Textbook Research Association, a member of the China Communications Society's Theory and Signal Processing Committee, the intelligence expert of the Asia-Pacific Sports Federation's Esports Committee, the technical expert of the Global Youth Artificial Intelligence and Robot Competition, the leader of the China University Computer Design Competition judging group, and a standing committee member of the National Higher Education Computer Basic Education Research Association's science and engineering committee.
Since its inception, the center has achieved a series of teaching achievements, including one national award for outstanding teaching achievement (collaborative), one national first prize for teaching achievement, one first prize and three second prizes for Beijing teaching achievement, one characteristic specialty of the Ministry of Education, two national quality courses, four Beijing quality courses, two national quality textbooks, and two Beijing quality textbooks. The center has also won more than 20 teaching awards from Peking University and experimental technology awards. In addition, the center has achieved remarkable results in electronic design, embedded system competitions, and other electronic competitions. In 2002, the center won first place in the Embedded System Special Invitation Competition and won the Intel Cup. The related achievements have been promoted in various forms in domestic colleges and universities and have produced a good demonstration effect.
The Introduction to The Computer Experimental Teaching Center of Peking University
The Computer Experimental Teaching Center of Peking University, established in 2000, was rated as National Demonstration Center for Experimental Computer Education in 2007. It belongs to the School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science and is responsible for the experimental teaching of nearly 20 undergraduate computer-related courses. The laboratory covers an area of 390 square meters and is equipped with an experimental environment that integrates advanced technology and is built in conjunction with cutting-edge scientific research. In 2016, a 10 Gigabit Ethernet network environment based on a 40G core switch was established. Currently, there are more than 200 workstations available, providing practical environments base on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
The laboratory also undertakes the development and maintenance of multiple teaching platforms, including a series of software practice platforms such as the Peking University Online Judge (POJ) system, the Peking University Online Program Competition Platform (BOTZONE), and the Programming Grid System (PG system). By the end of 2022, the POJ system had accumulated over 2 million registered users worldwide, with approximately 29,000 problems and over 64 million submissions. The BOTZONE system, as of April 2023, had more than 16,000 registered users, 42 games, over 170,000 bots (bots are programs submitted by users on BOTZONE with certain artificial intelligence capabilities that can compete against other bots or human players based on existing game rules), more than 900,000 bot evolved versions, and over 51.67 million matches.
The laboratory is also responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of the experimental platforms for the "Introduction to Computer Systems" course and the "Computer Networks" course. The laboratory utilizes the self-developed "Computer Open Laboratory Time Management System" and "Remote Management System" for automated management, ensuring stable and efficient fulfillment of daily experimental needs, as well as providing flexible and diverse temporary centralized computer environments for various computer competitions and exams.
The ACM Competition Laboratory of the center provides an independent learning and training venue for the students interested in programming competitions. The laboratory is open 24 hours a day for Peking University's ICPC training team. In 2022, Peking University's ICPC representative team won the gold medal and ranked second globally at the 45th ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest World Finals.
With the rapid development of artificial intelligence and robotics technology, AI literacy education has become increasingly crucial in society, and there is a shortage of professionals in this field. In 2018, with strong support from various functional departments of the university, the center initially established an open artificial intelligence experimental teaching center. The center combines experimental and research elements and serves as an integrated experimental base for teaching, research, competitions, and skill training. It includes teaching laboratories for artificial intelligence and robotics, cutting-edge internet technologies, biological signal processing and cognition, virtual/mixed reality, high-performance computing, network security, rapid prototyping, and more. It is open to students taking mandatory courses in the School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science, as well as elective courses for students throughout the university, providing an advanced experimental environment for teaching and research.
